Mephisto footwear was originated and developed by Martin Michaeli in 1965 and the company is still run by him today. In 1965 Michaeli’s goal was to make the World’s most Comfortable Walking Shoe, and this still holds true today. The factory and headquarters are located in Sarrebourg France where they make shoes that are sold in 46 countries.

1) Why are Mephistos so expensive?

Actually, they are not. Mephisto is an investment in comfort. The technology, materials, construction and quality components used to make every pair are never compromised. It is not uncommon to get years of wear from your Mephisto's. To enhance your investment, most of our styles are completely recraftable and can be reconstructed to original specifications.

2) What is a full grain aniline-dyed upper? Full grain leather assures better consistency in the hide quality and ultimately the fit of the upper. Uppers are cut from one hide which assures grain and texture matching of each pair as well as more consistent wearability. Aniline-dyed process creates a “naked leather” effect which maintains leather pore openings for maximum breathability and longer comfort. Mephisto leather uppers feature legendary durability and when properly maintained, they will provide many years of performance and wear.

3) Why doesn’t Mephisto offer more narrow and wide widths? Most of the world correctly fits the foot by creating lasts that match the shape of the foot. This is an important philosophy behind the Mephisto comfort system. By designing different lasts for different shaped feet we can fit most everyone correctly. We find many people have been misfit most of their lives. The Mephisto fit is unique in that it allows for the natural movement of the foot with no restrictions.
